Plein Air Sketching & Painting at Strickland House with Kevin McKay

Paint like the Impressionists at a site where native bush, historical buildings and the modern city meet around a glorious harbour.

Day One:Plein Air Sketching: Kevin will show how to build a composition from life and demonstrate various sketching techniques with special emphasis on ink wash. Bring sketchbooks, drawing board, pencils, charcoal, ink, mixing plate, bottle of water and sun protection.

Day Two:Plein Air Painting: Kevin will show how to compose a painting and block it in quickly with special tips on mixing colours in a direct encounter with the landscape and the fleeting effects of light. Bring sketchbook, small canvas or panel, basic paint kit (oil or acrylic), palette, solvent, medium, paint rag, sun protection.

Waxing Lyrical… Wax Resist techniques on Paper. with Deborah Leser

Learn to work with wax and dye paints to create your own unique range of gift papers, cards and artworks. This is a chance to have an adventure into the wonderful and diverse properties of the wax resist medium, where you will be encouraged to get spontaneous and experiment in colour, pattern and texture as you build up layers and effects that are full of surprises.

Included in the cost of the class will be dye stuff, wax and some paper.

Students are encouraged to bring a selection of different papers to work on. Paper needs to be natural, white or light in colour (as we will be dyeing it) and also be natural fibre papers. Deborah will also have a selection of papers to purchase. Students should also bring their own aprons and latex gloves.

Chinese Calligraphy Workshop

Chinese Calligraphy Workshop with Wendy Ma

Beginners course – no knowledge of Chinese necessary. All explanations will be in English. Learn to master the basics of Chinese calligraphy in this workshop. You will be taught the eight fundamental strokes properly and a brief history of pictograms from the Yellow Emperor to the modern age. Learn to write the Chinese characters for “Eternity” or “forever”, “Dragon”, “love” and many more, you will be surprised at how quickly you will learn . You will also have an opportunity to write a character of your choice in calligraphy.
